Reading Through History has many outstanding units available that have been written for various purposes over the years.  These units have not yet been committed to one of our resource manuals, but are no less effective in teaching content, and helping prepare students for standardized reading tests!

Geography of US & Canada:

This is a complete unit made specifically for a World Studies or Geography class. It includes teacher-made assignments that cover the landscapes, major waterways, economies, and people of the United States and Canada. Each reading assignment also includes constructed response questions, guided reading activities, and multiple choice reading comprehension questions. The unit includes comparison and contrast activities, a unit study guide, and a fifty question test with multiple DBQ questions.

State and Local Governments:

This is a six part unit by Reading Through History. In this unit, the subjects of state and local governments are covered. There are six individual lessons that include; state constitutions, state legislatures, governors, state courts, county government, and city government. For each lesson, there are three pages of student activities that include multiple choice questions, guided reading activities, vocabulary questions, student summaries, and an essay question. The download also includes a study guide and section test to gauge student retention of the material.

This is a five lesson unit by Reading Through History that is geared towards reading test preparation for the 5th grade reading test. This download includes lessons covering the history of the Wright Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Wiley Post, and Howard Hughes. It also includes 23 pages of student activities that involve: constructed response paragraphs, vocabulary activities, a timeline activity, and multiple choice quizzes to gauge reading comprehension.

The Liberty Unit:

This is a six part unit from Reading Through History that is focused on 4th and 5th grade reading standards. It includes six separate lessons focused on the history and symbolism of some of America’s most iconic symbols. The lessons include: the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, the New Colossus poem, the USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”), the Star-Spangled Banner flag, and the Star-Spangled Banner (National Anthem).

These are very informative readings designed to instill knowledge in the students while they practice improving their reading and writing skills. The questions are designed to allow the students to filter through the information multiple times, thus enhancing the value of the learning experience. Students should walk away with new and useful knowledge, all the while improving their reading skills. There is a one or two page reading activity for each topic, followed by reading comprehension questions, guided reading activities, vocabulary activities, student summaries, and a student response essay question.

Magnificent Monuments of Great Britain:

This is a four part unit by Reading Through History that is geared towards reading test preparation for the 5th grade reading test (but it would also be a great addition to any geography or world studies class). The package includes writeups for Stonehenge, Big Ben, the Tower of London, and Buckingham Palace.
