Reading Through History has a four lesson unit which highlights all of the important events and figures of the Progressive Era.  From Teddy Roosevelt to Woodrow Wilson, this unit touches all the bases for the early 1900s!

Theodore Roosevelt’s Domestic Policies:

This is a six lesson unit by Reading Through History that documents the
domestic policies of Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency. The series begins with Roosevelt becoming president due to McKinley’s assassination and continues with lessons focusing on Roosevelt the Trustbuster, the Coal Strike of 1902 and the war on railroad tycoons, Roosevelt’s Meat Inspection Act and Pure Food and Drug Act, Roosevelt’s conservationist policies, and Roosevelt’s involvement (or lack thereof) with civil rights issues.

For each one page reading there are three pages of student activities that include reading comprehension questions, vocabulary activities, guided reading activities, student summaries, and a student response essay question.

Early 20th Century Foreign Policy:

This is a complete unit from Reading Through History documenting early 20th Century US foreign policy. There are five individual lessons covering the Boxer Rebellion, the Roosevelt Corollary and Dollar Diplomacy, Theodore Roosevelt and the Panama Canal, Woodrow Wilson and Missionary Diplomacy, and Pancho Villa’s rebellion in Mexico. For each one page reading there are three pages of student activities that include reading comprehension questions, vocabulary activities, guided reading activities, student summaries, and a student response essay question.

Pancho Villa:

This is a one lesson unit by Reading Through History documenting the life of one of the heroes of the Mexican Revolution. It includes a one page biography of Villa’s life followed by four pages of student activities that include reading comprehension questions,T/F questions, a guided reading activity, student summaries, and a student response essay question.

Taft, Wilson, and the End of the Progressive Era:

This unit examines the Progressive policies of the presidencies of Taft and Wilson. It also includes lessons on women achieving suffrage, the failures of the Progressive Movement, and the reasons for the end of the Progressive Era.

Topics Include: William Howard Taft, the Election of 1912, the Bull Moose Party, Woodrow Wilson, Wilson’s antitrust measures, the federal income tax, the creation of the Federal Reserve, women gaining suffrage with the 19th Amendment, Wilson’s failure to support civil rights and the Progressive Era coming to an end.

There are six separate lessons in this unit. For each one to two page reading there are three pages of student activities that include reading comprehension questions, vocabulary activities, guided reading activities, student summaries, and a student response essay question.

Women’s Suffrage:

This is the complete bundle unit including both sections of Reading Through History’s celebration of the Women’s Suffrage Movement. This download contains 47 pages of student activities centered around the Seneca Falls Convention, the Women’s Suffrage Movement, the 19th Amendment, and biographies of leading figures such as Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul. The download includes guided reading materials, constructed response paragraphs, true and false questions, vocabulary activities, timelines, a creative writing activity, and multiple choice quizzes to gauge reading comprehension. Every reading topic also includes rigorous questions geared toward the 8th grade Common Core literature and reading standards.
