About Us

Reading Through History is a collaborative effort begun by two Western Oklahoma teachers and one website designer in the hopes of keeping History relevant in the education landscape of the 21st Century.

reading through historyIt’s no secret that many schools across the country have chosen to focus on math & science while relegating history classes to the dusty old bookshelf in the corner. However, reading and literacy has maintained a prominent position in the American education system.

Therefore, we at Reading Through History decided: If students are going to be reading, they might as well be reading history. By reading history, students are not only honing their literacy skills, but they are learning vital facts about US & World History at the same time.

We hope you share our love of history, and we hope you’ll join us in keeping history alive.

Meet the team:

If there was a Mount Rushmore for Reading Through History, Jake would have to be George Washington… the founding father, if you will.

Jake Henderson

Jake Henderson

Jake Henderson was born and raised in Enid, OK, where he lived until attending college.

He graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, OK where he earned a BA in History Education. He also has a Master’s Degree in History Education from SWOSU, which he earned in 2004.

He has taught US History, World History, AP Government, US Government, Geography, Oklahoma History, and Psychology at the High School level for more than ten years, and he currently lives and teaches in Woodward, OK.
Jake does much of the research for the Reading Through History team, as well as writing historical fiction.

If Jake is the George Washington on Reading Through History’s Mount Rushmore, then Robert must be Thomas Jefferson. Just as Jefferson helped mold and shape the nation we live in, Robert has helped mold and shape the vision of Reading Through History.

Robert was raised in Butler, OK. He graduated from SWOSU where he earned a BA in History Education.

Robert Marshall

Robert Marshall

He has taught U.S. History, World History, U.S. Government, Geography, Oklahoma History, World Studies, Art, and Music Appreciation at the middle and high school levels since 1999. He currently teaches at Blanche Thomas High School in Sentinel, Oklahoma.

Robert does research for Reading Through History, fact-checking & editing. He writes historical fiction, proof-reads, edits some more, and manages the Reading Through History Blog, as well as our Facebook content. You might call him a jack-of-all-trades.

So, Jake is Washington, and Robert is Jefferson… that must mean Mark is who? Oh, we’ll say he’s the Teddy Roosevelt of RTH’s Mount Rushmore. (We can’t really let him be Lincoln, can we?)

Mark Keefer

Mark Keefer

Mark is a native of Enid, OK. He has an Associate’s degree in Social Sciences from Northern Oklahoma College, which he graduated from in 2009. Mark is a very civic-minded individual, serving on several city committees and commissions. He has been a local business owner, and currently owns and operates the Route 60 Sentinel, a news blog website focusing on the northwest Oklahoma area.
